My Personal Experience Working for My English School
I worked for My English School for 4.5 years (3 years in Bologna, 1.5 years in Genoa). Needless to say, I loved it! When I started looking for a teaching job in Italy, I interviewed with several different schools. Most of them were very traditional in their method and teaching style, but there was something different about My English School…
The Method: My English School (aka MyES) uses a communicative method, with emphasis on speaking and conversation. The school has lesson materials already prepared, which means that you don’t really have to do a lot of preparation (yay! minimal lesson planning!). The lessons are in a powerpoint-like format, but the slides only act as a guide as the lessons are very interactive and there are many points in the lesson when the teacher interacts with students to get them talking and moving. Oh yeah — games are encouraged!
The Space: MyES has an open space layout. This means that there aren’t any closed classrooms, just little “nooks” with comfy armchairs and sofas. At first, it’s strange teaching in this environment, because you feel like everybody is watching you but after awhile you get used to it (and no, everybody is not watching you, just the students in your class!). The students are much more relaxed because of it!
Social Life: One of the things that I loved most about working with MyES is the interaction I had with students and other teachers. The school offers weekly social events for its students, so there are many opportunities to get to know students outside of lesson time.I can say from personal experience that the MyES Genova staff are some of the best people to work for. The Director of Studies is professional but also knows how to not take things too seriously. Things definitely get silly!
The City: What’s it like to live in Genoa? Genoa is the 5th largest city in Italy with one of the largest historical centers in all of Europe. It’s a wonderful old city, located on the sea and there’s a good amount of student/youth life at the weekends, especially in the “vicoli” (small alleyways). In the summer, Genoa is a GORGEOUS place to be, as you are very close to some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Italy (Cinque Terre is only an hour away, Portofino and Camogli are even closer!). Did I mention the never ending supply of focaccia and pesto?
