“I was born and raised a guido. It’s a life style. It’s about representing- family, Italian, tanning, gel. I got a f*cking tanning bed in my place. That’s how serious I am about being a guido.” – Pauly D. from MTV’s The Jersey Shore
What do The Godfather, The Sopranos, and The Jersey Shore all have in common? Stereotypes. Italian-American stereotypes. Hollywood’s exaggeration of what Italian-Americans are like is nothing new. And yet, it seems to have only gotten worse without most people even realizing it. While I do not want to discredit a producer’s ability to make a great movie or show, I do think there is problem with placing characters Italian-Americans into a generalized category of characteristics.
